Heartland - Our Teaching & Curriculum
At Northeast, we believe it’s important to teach the Bible creatively, using methods that are appropriate for the age of the children in the classroom. We also believe that Heartland should be FUN! We want kids to be engaged in our classroom activities and want to come back! We also recognize that children learn in different ways and we believe that it’s just as important for us to address learning styles as it is for your child’s school teachers to do so. To help with this, in Clubhouse 14 & 56, we use curriculum designed and written by The Potter’s Workshop. Children rotate to different workshops each Sunday during a four-to-six week unit. In each workshop, a unit’s concept is related to biblical stories through activities using one or more learning styles. Children might participate in workshops such as cooking, drama, art, computer, science, video production, geography, or math. Workshops change for each unit, so the experience is fresh each week.
We use The Potter’s Workshop units as a guide to develop age-appropriate lesson plans for our younger classes as well. While we use the same Bible stories and lessons, the activities are tailored to meet the needs of each class. Each class day includes a story and teaching time, a craft, a game, and a snack. Each of these elements is related, to the lesson and is reinforced throughout the class time.
